Facing Giants/Help Wanted……

At 6ft I am not short, but for grappling it’s all relative. We have had a number of guys in our academy who are above 6’4 and facing them can be daunting. Always in danger of being triangled, unable to escape their guards and the constant feeling that you are fighting an octopus or spider is the name of the game when facing these guys. Especially if they are lean. It’s worse if they are both lean and muscular.

My Achilles heel in class is Big J. At 6’4 to 6’6 (he says he forgets) he is an imposing figure. I can barely do anything against him. Although I have seen small traces of evidence that I can eventually counter him, right now ‘I’ve got nothing.”

How do you guys deal with taller opponents?

    I’m 5’10”, 155 lbs.

    With taller, heavier opponents (200+, 6′), I start on my butt, him on his knees.

    I go for arms drags quickly, often pushing one of his knees out to collapse his base, and try to move to his back.

    My main tenet when going against bigger guys is that their strength is mostly inside (i.e anywhere in the space in front of them between their arms). So I don’t want to be there. That’s why I try to get to the outside of their arms (e.g. by doing arm drags)
