Last night was exhausting… We worked on guard passes and I gassed out in the first few minutes of class. Breathing wise, I was okay (at first) but I ran out of strength quickly. My goal last night was to begin working harder in practice to prepare for this tournament, but my body had different [...]

During this Jiujitsu365 project there are a number of different styles of guard that I want to learn. One of them is the x-guard. It has always sounded exotic and I have been fascinated by the concept of being able to do it. Since beginning this project I have been able to improve my open guard as [...]

Actually it is the 64th day….. and it’s time to evaluate what I have accomplished in this time period.
Well, I have continued to do Jiu-Jitsu everyday whether in class or own my own. My rule of practicing a minimum of 30 techniques per day has not changed. At times I do more than that (other times the bare [...]

For last night’s class I decided to change my approach. For the past month or so I have been practicing my butterfly guard and open guard. Therefore, I have been seeking a bottom position when rolling with sparring partners.
As a result, I have seen my guard passed continuosly and have had to fight out of many [...]

Last night I tapped continuously. Although it was a small class due to the new year, two of the guys that I use as a measuring stick for my progress were there and they were holding a clinic. My butterfly guard, open guard and mount escapes were not working at all last night.
One of the guys [...]

The solo drills I have been doing are the only way for me to explain the improvement I exhibited in last night’s class. The first time I tried to use the butterfly guard and sweeps in class after practicing the solo drills for 5 days straight I saw an improvement but had my guard passed like I was a [...]

So now I have been practicing Jiu-jitsu every day for over two weeks. What have I learned?
I now know that my approach to Jiu-jitsu should be the same as when I played other sports in the past. Whether it was basketball, cross country, tennis, football or other martial arts, constant and consistent practice made me [...]

Wow! The drills that I have been doing in anticipation of class tonight paid off. I was able to pull off a butterfly guard sweep and had many near sweeps. I was also able to halfway implement the mount escapes that I have been working on for the past few days.
In the brief time between [...]

I’ve practiced at home before, but now I am attempting to do it everyday that I don’t attend class. I also need to develop a training regimen.
November 15th: I stretched and worked on hip flexibility for Eddie Bravo type moves. I worked on my triangle from both sides, rear naked chokes and bridging exercises. (Solo drills)
November 16th: [...]
